Agony haunts homeless in Erode

ERODE: Though the flood in Cauvery River has begun to recede, rain has continued to affect flood victims. .

More than 60,000 cusecs was flowing into Cauvery on Friday. Already 79,000 cusecs had been released on Thursday, and hut dwellers living on the river bank left for high-rise areas. .

They have kept their belongings inside the Sri Raghavendra Swamy Temple and Erode Panchayat Union Elementary School. Many staying outside the two places slept in the open spaces.

Firewood destroyed

Some with their belongings had assembled in the open spaces near the temple when heavy rain during the last midnight and on Friday noon made their life worse.

Several tonnes of firewood kept on roads by washermen were also affected.

Despite steady reduction in the discharge from Cauvery no one was allowed to occupy their huts or houses by the revenue and police officials, fearing another possible heavy discharge.

Power supply has been cut off to the huts and houses put up on the riverbank.

Some of the flood-affected are staying in their kin's home. On behalf of the Surabi Foundation, Kodumudi and Multi-Purpose Social Service Centre, Coimbatore relief measures were granted to the flood-affected persons of Chathirapatty, Kombupalayam and Karanampalayam near Kodumudi.

On Thursday night there was very heavy rain in Erode district. Sathyamangalam recorded 33 mm of rain, Erode and Bhavanisagar 6 mm each. There was downpour in Bhavani, Ammapet and Kodumudi too.

LBP filling up fast

There was heavy inflow into Lower Bhavani Reservoir Project. The level on Friday stood at 102.10 feet against the full level of 105 feet and the dam had 29 tmc ft of water against full capacity of 32 tmc ft. Of the 3835 cusecs flowing into the reservoir only 500 cusecs was allowed into the canal.
