Thrissur: A hartal called by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Guruvayur on Friday, alleging that the United Democratic Front (UDF) Government and the Devaswom managing committee are torpedoing land acquisition for development of the Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple, was total. The supporters of the bandh burned Tourism Minister K.C. Venugopal in effigy at the Kizhekke Nada (eastern side entrance) of the temple. Shops and business establishments in the temple town remained closed. The hartal did not deter a large number of devotees from visiting the temple. Thirty-three marriages and 436 `choroonu' ceremonies were held there. As many as 3,800 people were given food (`prasada oottu') at the temple, Devaswom officials said.
