Mistaken identity

It was painful to read that a 21-year-old man bearing resemblance to the suspected terrorist who set off a bomb in a bus in Delhi was beaten up and handed over to the police by residents of Vaishali in Ghaziabad (Nov. 4). He was later found innocent and released by the police. Such overzealous acts can prove dangerous. Detention of innocent people will leave a permanent scar in their minds. We need to remember that terrorists are made, not born.

V. Krishnakumar,
New Delhi

It is indeed heartening to see the Delhi people joining in the hunt for the suspects of the serial blasts. But the detention of an innocent man is a reminder to the people that they should not be overzealous.

Shikha Lakhanpal,

Once again our leaders have issued statements saying terrorism knows no boundaries, it needs to be fought with a heightened resolve, people should remain calm and so on. For how much longer should we continue to hear such empty rhetoric? Why can India not influence world leaders into accepting that terrorism has its roots in Pakistan?

Ironically, in the war on global terrorism, world leaders are ignoring the source of terrorism. There is an urgent need for us to introspect why such attacks keep taking place despite assurances from across the border that there is no terror infrastructure in place.

S. Sudhir Kumar,
Waltham, Massachusetts

Perpetrators of terror should be dealt with as savagely as they treat others. India should emulate the U.S., the U.K. and Israel, which have made stringent laws to curb terrorism.

Abhishek Gairola,
New Delhi

The Delhi blasts have reinforced that India is a peace loving country; Pakistan keeps battering us and we are forever waiting to make friends.

P.D. Abhinandan,
Bangalore
