Munich fair co. looks for partners

Special Correspondent

The company will undertake fair development, facility management and marketing

CHENNAI: Messe Munchen GmbH, the trade fair company of Munich, one of the leading fair management and marketing companies in Germany and the world, is looking for suitable partners in India for developing the potential of the business in this country.

Messe Munchen is looking for partners who would have the "right connections" and capability to convince the State and Central governments and local authorities of the need to provide world class infrastructure as a prerequisite to development of a trade fair centre with the ultimate objective of accelerating the economic growth, employment and revenues of the State and city concerned, according to Manfred Wutzlhofer, Chairman and CEO.

Key areas of focus

Talking to presspersons under the auspices of the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IGCC) here on Friday, Mr. Wutzlhofer said Messe Munchen would itself not invest in the project chosen for development in India but would undertake fair development, facility management and marketing. He said though the new fair centres in Noida and Chennai were "very functional" and met high standards, the most important requirements of any centre that would compete with the world's leading centres were top-class transportation and hotel infrastructure and adequate space for developing facilities in phases in tune with the growth of demand. Noida had two-level halls, which were not suitable for hosting fairs of capital goods and some other product lines. The India Trade Promotion Organisation's (ITPO) Pragati Maidan complex in New Delhi was good in terms of location but it "needs improvement".

The scope for the exhibition industry in India, he said, had brightened in view of the "dramatic change in the mindset of companies worldwide" with respect to India's potential and their present assessment of India as a market offering "limitless opportunities" in the medium term and long term.

Mr. Wutzlhofer said Messe Munchen had, together with trade fair organisations of Dusseldorf and Hannover and a local Chinese partner, constructed the Shanghai New International Expo Centre which was opened in 2001 and was being expanded.
