BJP striving to keep its 25-year record of avoiding election for top post

  • Hopeful that the party will sort out "Parivar problems"
  • Channels open for dialogue with the RSS
  • Congress contemplating mid-term election

PATNA: Bharatiya Janata Party vice-president M. Venkaiah Naidu on Friday said he was not in the race for president and that L.K. Advani's successor would be chosen by consensus.

Choosing the new president would not be a big issue, he told newsmen here.

The BJP was striving to keep its 25-year record of avoiding an election for the top post.

Mr. Naidu expressed the hope that the party would sort out its "Parivar problems," particularly with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, and internal bickering and resurrect itself into contention. "We have the character, calibre and capacity to resurrect ourselves."The party was aware that unless it kept its house in order it would not be in a position to face the challenges posed by the Congress.

Channels were open for a dialogue with the RSS and meetings would be held regularly on larger issues, he added.
