Rain again

MADURAI: After a brief dry spell, the city experienced incessant drizzle along with intermittent heavy rain on Friday. The level in the Periyar dam on Friday stood at 122.40 feet with an inflow of 548 cusecs and a discharge of 1,000 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 48.13 feet with an inflow of 776 cusecs and a discharge of 1,741 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 4599 mcft.

SP assumes office

Abhay Kumar Singh, a 1992-batch Indian Police Service officer, is the new Superintendent of Police of Madurai district. The outgoing SP, T. Sundaresan, handed over charge to him on Friday. Mr. Singh was the Superintendent of Police, Crime Branch - Crime Investigation Department, Chennai, before taking up the new assignment. He had worked as SP in various districts, including Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Villupuram and Tuticorin. Mr. Singh told presspersons that he believed in teamwork. He said any aggrieved person could meet him any day to air grievances.

Mayor case

Mr. Sundaresan clarified that Mayor C. Ramachandran, who was arrested over the fatal accident involving the Bharatiya Janata Party woman councillor, Pandeeswari, was not booked under murder charge. The councillor's husband, Ramesh, being cross-examined, had not given any evidence in support of his "murder" allegation, he said.
