Passion for colours

The challenging part of Sheeba's job was the depiction of mural-like paintings on glass

Sheeba Somakumar is obsessed with colours. She is interested in colour combinations. An exhibition-cum-sales of her glass paintings currently on at the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi Art Gallery in Kozhikode reveals her passion for colours.

But the challenging part of her job was the depiction of mural-like paintings on glass. She took the advice of K. K. Marar, an expert in mural paintings based in Thalasserry.

"He advised me to use primary colours so as to get a look of natural colours, which are used in mural paintings. I have exhibited it (seven of them) as the first set of paintings so as to know the opinion of noted painters," she says.

Paul Kallanode, artist who saw her mural-like paintings, asked her to infuse more feelings into those paintings. She is thinking of improving upon her paintings based on the opinions of famous artists.

Sheeba who teaches English at Apex International School here also exhibits a variety of glass paintings.

She does fabric painting, oil and pot painting apart from glass painting. Initiated into the world of painting at the age of four, Sheeba studied paintings and obtained a diploma from Santanu Chitra Vidyalaya in Chennai.

She has also exhibited couple of her ceramic creations which includes a couple of flower pots with a bunch of grapes pasted on one of it. People are buying glass paintings for hanging up in their houses as an interior decoration.

Lot of women are taking up glass painting as a hobby.

"If you have the basic interest in what you do, then you can do it. Also, practise makes perfect," she says. This is Sheeba's first exhibition as a professional.

The exhibition also features three of the works (glass paintings) of her father's friend, Saneesh. The exhibition is on at the Art Gallery till November 7.
