Special Correspondent

Discussions on with Government in this regard: Union Minister

PANAJI: The NASSCOM has started its initiative to promote information technology in tier II cities, and, as a part of this ongoing effort, it is already in discussion with the Goa Government.

Shantaram Naik, Rajya Sabha MP from Goa, said that Union Minister for Information and Technology Dayanidhi Maran informed this to him in a letter. Mr. Maran said in the letter that Goa is emerging as one of the next set of tier II places in the country from the IT point of view due to education and trained manpower.

Among the joint initiatives of the Centre and the State in Goa, the letter said that the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Goa Government on August 6, 2004 for setting up of STPI facility at Goa. Education Research and Network, under the Department of Information Technology, has set up connectivity at four institutions in Goa — Goa University, ICAR Research Complex for Goa, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya and Goa Engineering College. The National Informatics Centre has also been providing e-Governance support to the State Government Secretariat at North and South Goa, Mr. Naik said.
