PONDICHERRY: The formation of a `welfare society for unorganised labourers' by the Labour Department's is one of its new moves to take care of the 25 categories of workers coming under the unorganised group. They include autorickshaw drivers, employees in shops and establishments, carpenters, nadaswara artists, hairdressers, tailors, cobblers, washermen, tree climbers and toddy tappers and those engaged in manufacturing bricks and tiles and workers distributing LPG cylinders to customers. Health and Labour Minister E. Valsaraj, who for the first time handed gift coupons for Rs. 300 recently to each of the nearly 4,500 workers (society members), said the society formed in January 2001 had so far benefited 760 members under different schemes involving a disbursement of Rs 16.73 lakhs.
Solatium
The society gives Rs. 20,000 as solatium to the family of the worker who dies owing to natural cause. In case of death in accidents or a worker suffering permanent disability, the society extends an ex gratia of Rs. 50,000 to the family. For partial disability, Rs. 25,000 is provided. The society also utilizes a scheme of the Life Insurance Corporation of India to bring the workers under the `Jana Shree Bhima Yojana' to provide assistance to the workers or their families. Scholarship is given as envisaged under the LIC-sponsored Jana Shree Bhima yojana for children.
