DEHRA DUN: The Uttaranchal Chief Minister, Narayan Dutt Tiwari, on Saturday clarified that water from the Bhagirathi continued to flow downstream to form the holy Ganga and had not been totally stopped by the Tehri Dam as made out in a section of the media. "The Bhagirathi river water has been partially stopped for some time to fill up the reservoir of the Tehri Dam wsich will soon be able to cater to the drinking water and irrigation needs of Western Uttar Pradesh and Delhi and meet a part of the power needs of the nation," Mr. Tiwari said. It may be mentioned that although the Tehri Dam is being projected as a major feat in building high rise dams in the fragile Himalayas, a good section of the geologists and environmentalists are still opposed to the project fearing it might spell disaster.
