Mulayam responsible for Mau deaths: BJP

Mau (UP): Holding Chief Minister, Mulayam Singh Yadav, responsible for the death of 12 people in Mau riots, the BJP on Saturday asserted that a judicial probe should be conducted into last month's communal clashes.

``Had the Chief Minister acted promptly and ordered strict action against trouble makers, the situation would not have gone out of control,'' former BJP Minister in UP, Surya Pratap Shahi, who led party's fact finding team, told reporters here.

``For 72 hours, rioters had a free hand and they continued to massacre innocents,'' Mr. Shahi said alleging that government shielded those responsible for the riots.

Reiterating the party's demand for a judicial inquiry, Mr. Shahi also demanded setting up of a Commission to assess the losses and ensure proper rehabilitation.

Criticising the Chief Minister for not visiting Mau, Mr. Shahi said that a similar incident had taken place in the town earlier in October when some ``anti-socials'' tried to spoil peace but the administration, under government ``pressure'', had to let them off. Mr. Shahi alleged that police patrolling was only confined to the main routes while their presence in the densely populated lanes was negligible. -PTI
