CHANDIGARH: The PGI here will observe National Cancer Awareness Day on Monday as per the guidelines of the National Cancer Control Programme enunciated by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, according to S.C. Sharma, Professor and Head of Department of Radiotherapy. Dr. Sharma said here on Saturday that the World Health Organisation recognised cancer as a huge public health problem, killing more people worldwide than the combined death toll from malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. The WHO figures revealed that more than one third (43 per cent) of all cancers could be prevented by tackling the three major factors of tobacco, diet and infectious agents.
