Wildlife trophies worth Rs. 20 lakhs seized

BANGALORE: Officials of the CID Forest Cell on Saturday raided a house in Mysore and seized 16 wildlife trophies and ivory statutes, estimated to be worth Rs. 20 lakhs. The Inspector-General of Police, CID Forest Cell, K.S.N. Chikkerur, said the wildlife trophies were seized from the house of Anil Sawhney (56), a retired tea estate manager, near the Chamundi Hills. On a complaint by the CID Forest Cell officials, the Nazarbad police in Mysore have registered a case against Sawhney under the Wildlife Protection Act and arrested him. Deputy Superintendent of Police Venkat Shetty and Sub-inspector Chikkegowda, who conducted the raid, have won a reward of Rs. 10,000.

to meet today

BANGALORE: Members of the All-India Congress Committee from the State will meet at the Congress Bhavan, Queen's Road here on Sunday at 11 a.m. Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh and KPCC (Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee) President M. Mallikarjun Kharge will participate. — Special Correspondent

Excess rainfall

in 13 districts

BANGALORE: Thirteen districts in the State recorded excess rainfall between October 22 and 28, according to a report of the Directorate of Economics and Statistics. Rainfall was in excess in Bangalore Urban and Rural districts, Chitradurga, Davangere, Kolar, Shimoga, Tumkur, Chamarajanagar, Hassan, Mandya, Mysore, Raichur and Dharwad districts. Rainfall was normal in Chikmagalur, Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, Bellary, Bidar, Gulbarga, Bagalkot, Bijapur, Gadag and Haveri districts. It was scanty in Udupi and deficit in Koppal, Belgaum and Uttara Kannada districts. — Special Correspondent

Dyavaiah has been transferred. R. Uday Kumar, Conservator of Forests, has been posted as Conservator of Forests, Working Plan, Chikmagalur. V. Rangaswamy has been transferred. B.P. Ravi, Deputy Conservator of Forests, has been posted as DCF, Koppa division. Rajkumar Srivastava has been transferred, according to a notification.

Congress conventions in four districts

BANGALORE: The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee will hold districts-level conventions in four districts from November 7 to 10. In a press note, Manjunath Bhandary, KPCC General Secretary, said the conventions will be held in Udupi (on November 7), Dakshina Kannada (November 8), Chikmagalur (November 9), and Uttar Kannada (November 10). Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh and KPCC President M. Mallikarjun Kharge will address the conventions, the note said. — Special Correspondent

JD(S) faction appoints presidents of units

Bangalore: Satish Jharkiholi, President of the State unit of the Siddaramaiah faction of the Janata Dal (Secular), has appointed M. Anjanappa Reddy as President of Bangalore city unit of the faction. He has appointed Vijayalakshmi S. Shikaripur as President of the State women's wing of the group.

Complaint against Tourism Minister

Bangalore: T.D.R. Harishchandra, a former member of the All-India Congress Committee, has told N. Thippanna, President of the State unit of the Janata Dal (Secular), that Minister for Tourism D.T. Jayakumar is using poor language in his criticism of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda. In a statement here on Saturday, Mr. Harishchandra said Mr. Thippanna has agreed to look into the matter after drawing the attention of the Tourism Minister.
