Campus of IISc., Bangalore, likely to be set up in Mysore

International Centre for Theoretical Physics may have its Asia centre

  • Delegation from IISc. to hold talks with the University of Mysore on November 24
  • Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics had proposal to open its Asian centre in Mysore
  • Centre lists 20 universities to implement `Mysore Model' to promote pure sciences

MYSORE: In a move that could enhance the city's reputation as a centre for learning and boost its fortunes, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.), Bangalore, is likely to establish its campus here.

Likewise, the Italy-based International Centre for Theoretical Physics managed by UNESCO, Government of Italy and International Atomic Energy Association is contemplating establishing its Asia-centre here.

    Talks

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mysore J. Shashidhar Prasad said here on Saturday that talks on the establishment of the Mysore centre of the Indian Institute of Science have gained momentum and they are at a crucial stage.

Prof. Prasad, who was speaking at the Academic Council meeting of the university, said that a delegation of senior scientists and top brass of the premier institute will visit Mysore in this connection on November 24 and hold discussions with the University of Mysore.

    Advanced research

Meanwhile, sources said the entry of Indian Institute of Science into Mysore, which is universally recognised as among the best institutes in the world, will help lay the foundation stone for advanced research in science and technology in the city.

In fact, the presence of premier research and design institutes, centre of advanced learning and institutes of managements are the key factors that further investors' confidence and are bound to have a positive impact on the development of Mysore.

    Plan

Though the plan of the Indian Institute of Science is still in the discussion stage, sources in the university expressed confidence that it will come through.

The sources said it is only befitting that the campus and the extension centre of the Indian Institute of Science be established in the city as it is entirely due to the munificence of the then Maharaja of Mysore Nalwudi Krishnaraja Wadiyar that the Indian Institute of Science was realised.

    Recommendations

On the recommendations of Dewan Seshadri Iyer, the Maharaja granted 350 acres of prime land in Bangalore for the Indian Institute of Science which was the brain child of J.N. Tata who was keen that a national institute be established to undertake first-rate research for the progress and development of science and engineering in the country. Hence, it will be befitting for the institute to return the favour to Mysore, the sources added.

Likewise, there was a proposal before the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) to establish its Asian centre here.

The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics was established to foster advanced research and studies in physics and mathematics in the developing world.

    `Mysore model'

Prof. Prasad said the Centre has recognised the five-year integrated courses in physics, chemistry and molecular biology as a role model to be emulated by other universities. The Union Government has listed 20 select universities across the country to implement the "Mysore Model" to promote pure sciences and has sanctioned Rs.45 lakhs per annum for each department.
