Mangalore city yet to get proper bus terminus

Special Correspondent

Authorities are unable to decide between a centralised service and a decentralised system

  • The MCC has debated the possibility of a permanent bus terminus in several of its meetings
  • Earlier, the central city terminus was to be located at Karangalapady

MANGALORE: The need for a proper bus terminus for Mangalore city is growing owing to the constantly increasing number of vehicles and the resulting congestion.

However, the issue is yet to be resolved by the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), which has debated the possibility of a permanent bus terminus in several of its meetings. The city continues to labour under the congested temporary service bus .

The problem regarding the permanent bus terminus is two-pronged: Authorities are unable to decide between a centralised service bus stand and a decentralised system with three termini in different areas to help decongest traffic.

The former Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada Bharatlal Meena had earmarked sites for bus stands at Kottara for buses coming from Udupi (NH 17), at Mallikatta for buses coming from Moodbidri and at Karkala (NH 13) for buses coming from Bantwal (NH 48).

The central city terminus was planned at Karangalapady after the relocation of the district sub jail from that area.

However, the proposals had to be shelved.

The former Commissioner of the corporation J.R. Lobo (who is presently the Assistant Project Director of the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation) had announced in one of the meetings of the corporation that a site for the central bus terminus has been identified near Mahaveera Circle (formerly Pumpwell Circle).

Before the council takes a decision on a decentralised system it is important to take into consideration the convenience of commuters.

Since the bus termini are to be situated away from the city centre there is a need to introduce feeder bus services connecting the various termini.
