HYDERABAD: Former Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya on Saturday opposed the proposal of the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad (MCH) to earmark parking lots on school playgrounds and urged the civic body to come out with a comprehensive and scientific strategy to tackle traffic chaos and parking blues in the city. Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Dattatreya said playgrounds in schools were meant for children who should not be deprived of the facility for the sake of parking vehicles. "It is mandatory for schools to provide adequate space for children to play around and if the same is packed with vehicles, where will the students go," he said.
MMTS
Instead of going in for short-term projects, the MCH should evolve a proper plan to address the increasing traffic problem in the city and provide parking space for vehicles, he suggested. Demanding Government attention on the Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS), Mr. Dattatreya said though the service had the potential to solve traffic problems to a large extent, it was not being properly utilised. The MMTS service needed to be extended till Patancheru and a combination rail-road pass be issued at the earliest, he said. The BJP leader felt the need for complete handing over of MMTS project to the Railways. The party's city president, Venkataramani, criticised the Government for not providing ration cards in the city and said the party would launch an agitation demanding the same. A massive dharna would be held at the office of Chief Rationing Officer at Paradise on November 7, he said.
