VICTIMS OF POLLUTION: The fish that were found dead in Nellorahalli Lake near Whitefield. Photo: V. Sreenivasa Murthy
BANGALORE: Hundreds of fish were found dead in the "contaminated" Nellorahalli Lake near Whitefield on Saturday. According to the villagers a contractor was breeding fish in the lake. Villagers who found the fish dead on the lake bund on Saturday morning informed the Mahadevapura City Municipal Council (CMC) authorities who alerted the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB). A team of officials led by Regional Officer of KSPCB (Bangalore East) Syed Khaja Moiuddin visited the lake. Mr. Moiuddin told The Hindu that preliminary investigation suggested that the sewage from the Nellorahalli village that enters the lake had killed the fish. Polluted water from a jewellery industry was also entering the lake. "This resulted in reduction of the dissolved oxygen level leading to the death of fish," he said. The KSPCB officials have sent some of the dead fish for examination. The PCB authorities also directed the CMC authorities to bury the dead fish on the lake bund to prevent spread of diseases. The Lake Development Authority (LDA) has held a private hospital responsible for contaminating the lake. Its Chairman B.K. Singh said that the private hospital located close to the lake, had been releasing medical waste. "We have repeatedly asked the hospital authorities to stop this, but they have not obliged." The LDA, he said, had now requested the KSPCB to take action against the hospital.
