Increased focus on social security

Himachal Pradesh claims that 50 per cent of Plan outlay being used for weaker sections


  • Bal and Balika Ashrams destitute, abandoned and orphan children providing education upto Plus Two
  • Four State homes and protective homes providing shelter, food, education and training to young girls and widows
  • Six new hostels to be constructed for Scheduled Caste and Backward Classes students
  • Rs. 25,000 to be given as outright grant in aid for remarriage of widows.

    SHIMLA: Himachal Pradesh is spending around 50 per cent of its budget on the social sector from its total plan outlay for the weaker sections of the society. The State Government is spending Rs. 138.34 crore for implementing various welfare schemes under the Social Security and Welfare works out of which Rs. 50.34 crore is spent on Social Security Pension alone annually. It has earmarked Rs. 1764.82 lakh for welfare of SC, ST, OBC and Rs. 123.39 lakh under disability sector, claimed a government spokesman here today.

    With a view to provide free shelter and education upto plus two level, the Bal and Balika Ashrams have been established for destitute, abandoned and orphan children in various parts of the State. Earlier this facility was available upto matriculation level only.

    Four State homes and protective homes are also being run which are providing shelter, food, education and training to the young girls, widows, deserted, destitute and women. State Government has also enhanced the marriage grant to destitute girls from Rs. 2,500 to Rs. 5,100 last year. An amount of Rs. 24.16 lakh was spent on providing this grant to 629 beneficiaries last year and Rs. 51 lakhs are being spent during this year, the spokesman said.
