"Make Tamil syllabus more accessible "

Two-day meet begins at Dr. MGR-Janaki College for Women

CHENNAI: The categories and forms of Tamil literature — classic, folk and contemporary — formed part of the discussions which began at Dr. MGR-Janaki College for Women here on Saturday. The need to rework the syllabus and allowing the language to change with the changing times were the recurring themes at the inauguration of the international seminar on World Tamil Literature at the college. The two-day seminar is being organised by the Tamil department and the International Institute of Tamil Studies.

A collection of three volumes containing around 160 essays to be presented at the seminar was released.

The chairman of the Jeppiaar group of institutions, Jeppiaar, was the chief guest. He said the institute should take up the task of making Tamil syllabus for schoolchildren more accessible and contemporary. He pledged support to attempts at enriching and developing Tamil. Bhaskaran, registrar, Thanjavur Tamil University, received the first copy of the volumes of the essays. He appreciated the efforts taken to print the essays, saying that language and literature were public goods and should be made freely available and accessible.
