THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) leader T.M. Jacob has said that the Government is withdrawing police cases registered against operators of unauthorised lotteries. There is corruption behind it, he said. Mr. Jacob said in a statement here on Sunday said that out of the 296 cases registered in various police stations, 253 had already been withdrawn. These included charge-sheeted cases and cases on which FIR had been filed. As many as 15 serious cases registered in Kozhikode district, four cases in Kasaragod district and all cases registered in Ernakulam and Idukki districts had been withdrawn. In Palakkad, cases involving Rs.130 cores had been withdrawn. Following withdrawal of the cases, unauthorised paper lotteries were back in circulation. The ban against daily draws was being breached. Thus the operators were evading large sums as tax. The Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) leader said that it had become clear now that the powers to check unauthorised lotteries and tax evasion were taken away from the Lotteries Directorate and entrusted to the Commercial Taxes Department to cater to the interests of the lottery mafia.
