Chamarajanagar: The Southern Regional Centre of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) has brought out the 17 volumes of "Epigraphia Carnatica'' in a single CD-ROM. Assistant Director of ICHR told The Hindu that "Epigraphia Carnatica,'' edited by B.L. Rice, was out of print for many decades. It is an essential source for the study of language, literature, culture and history of any region. It is estimated that Kannada has the largest number of inscriptions with the exception of Tamil. Rice, who was appointed part-time director of the Department of Archaeology of Mysore State in 1884, collected 8,869 inscriptions till 1906 in the eight districts of that State and Coorg, which was then a separate State. He brought out these inscriptions with their translation in English in a series entitled "Epigraphia Carnatica.'' The inscriptions of each district have been accommodated in one volume, he said. R. Narasimhacharya, who succeeded Rice, brought to light 5,000 inscriptions. Later, the 12 volumes were revised by Narasimhacharya, K. Neelakantashastry, M. Sheshadri and M.H. Krishna. The ICHR initiated the project of digitisation when Shadkshara Shettar was its President in 1999. The cost of the CD-ROM is Rs. 500. Those interested to buy it can contact the Assistant Director, ICHR, Southern Regional Centre, Law College premises, Palace Road, Bangalore 560009.
