KOTTAYAM: The Mahatma Gandhi University Employees Association, Left-leaning service organisation of the administrative staff here, has decided to launch protests seeking, among other things, a lasting solution to the financial crisis in the university, end to corruption and mismanagement, revoking the ban on appointments, creation of new posts, transparency in appointments, foolproof mechanism for conduct of examinations, and an inquiry into the functioning of the Syndicate during the past four years. Speaking to mediapersons here on Monday, association president K.M. Premachandran Unnithan and general secretary K. Sherefuddin said the two-day State conference of the association scheduled here for Wednesday and Thursday would give a final shape to the agitation. Alleging wasteful extravagance by the administration, the association leaders highlighted the procurement of five new cars, construction of new quarters for the Vice-Chancellor at a cost of Rs.1 crores, expending Rs.25 lakhs more than what the university got from candidates for the Grade II entrance examination and so on. The decision to do away with the ceiling on telephone calls for the Syndicate members and hike in their DA and TA with retrospective effect have already come under criticism, they said. They also took exception to the notification issued for appointment to the 45 Class IV posts at the university. They said 40,000 applications received against a similar notification in 1996 could not be entertained on account of the existing ban on new appointments. They also alleged that the Syndicate was interested in taking steps to devise a `foolproof' mechanism for conducting examinations. The university has lost lakhs of rupees on account of the unscientific manner in which the centralised valuation camps were conducted, they said. These issues will be discussed in detail and final decision on the protests taken at the two-day annual conference, which will be inaugurated by Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan, they said.
