14-day custody for Mukhtar Ansari

Mau (UP) : A local court on Tuesday remanded independent MLA Mukhtar Ansari to 14 days judicial custody in connection with the Mau riots.

The MLA, who surrendered before a Ghazipur court last month in another case, was produced before Chief Judicial Magistrate A.K. Pandey, who remanded him to judicial custody. Jitendra Yadav, who had lodged an FIR against Ansari but later reneged on his statement before the media, meanwhile, submitted an affidavit before the court stating that the MLA had nothing to do with the riots or killings. Ansari told reporters at the court campus that he was being made a ``scapegoat by vested political interests''.

He claimed that Hindu Mahasabha MP from Gorakhpur Adityanath and BJP MLC Ramji Singh are responsible for the riots. ``The media footage showed me moving about in the town without highlighting as to how I was trying to pacify the people of the town over inactive administration,'' Ansari said. -PTI
