Spectacular Surya Kirans enthral all

Staff Correspondent

BHOPAL: The citizens were enthralled by a breathtaking aerobatic show by the Indian Air Force team of Surya Kirans over the vast expanse of the Upper Lake here in the heart of Bhopal on Tuesday.

The air show, to be repeated on Wednesday, was held as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of Madhya Pradesh.

On Tuesday afternoon, all roads led to the picturesque Upper Lake and there was a virtual traffic jam on roads leading to the Lake View drive and the VIP road that together encircles the lake on three sides.

There was some fog initially and the air-show was delayed but the balconies, terraces over-looking the lake and the adjoining roads remained packed with an enthusiastic crowd that waited patiently and every one kept looking skyward for the show to begin. While the sun was still shining on the western horizon, two Surya Kiran aircrafts appeared, flying low almost touching the water surface with their wing tips only a few metres apart.

They undertook many different profiles and presented a series of dynamic combinations that gave the people a chance to witness numerous formations.

People were seen clapping and cheering the Air Force team as it performed but those who were expecting the entire Surya Kiran team to perform were obviously disappointed as only two aircraft were engaged in the aerobatics show on Tuesday afternoon.

After witnessing the show, the television personality and Madhya Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party spokesman, Nitish Bharadwaj, said the Upper Lake is a better venue for an air show of this kind than even Mumbai's Marine drive. The police and district authorities were seen in action controlling the huge rush of vehicular traffic.
