NEW DELHI: Seeking the intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, members of Indian Telecom Service Association (ITSA) carried out a candle march from Jantar Mantar to draw attention to the stalemate on the issue of their absorption into telecom PSUs Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam. The 2,200 Group A ITS officers are protesting against the Communications Ministry's "indifference" to the "gradual deterioration" of telecom services offered by the PSUs due to the absence of a large number of middle and top level officers who have been sent back to their parent cadre, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
Re-instated
As a result of the failure of the absorption process, DoT has been asking 2,200 ITS cadre officers to get absorbed into BSNL and MTNL. Over 1,300 officers have been reinstated at DoT on October 18 with the result that there are no ITS officers in the corporate offices of MTNL and BSNL for over three weeks. The officers say they have refrained from opting for permanent absorption into BSNL and MTNL because the service conditions do not meet the career aspirations of the officers. They also have serious reservations about the security of pension payment.
