Government cannot increase compensation: Minister

Special Correspondent

Estimated loss of crops and property put at Rs. 41.71 crores

BIDAR: Minister for Forests Gurupadappa Nagamarapalli on Tuesday said it will be difficult to follow the Maharashtra pattern of payment of compensation to farmers who lost their crops due to the floods in the Manjra.

Bad financial condition

Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, Mr. Nagamarapalli, who is also Bidar district in-charge, said the present financial condition of the State does not permit it to enhance the crop-loss compensation paid to farmers who lost their crops in the floods.

The Minister said that the estimated loss of crops and public and private property in the floods has been put at Rs. 41.71 crores.

Crops on 8,857 acres of land were lost in the floods.

A sum of Rs. 69 lakhs has been paid as compensation to the farmers and Rs. 11.72 lakhs will be disbursed to the farmers in the second phase shortly, the Minister added.

He said that the State Government will not tolerate any misappropriation of the relief amount.

He said officials should ensure quality of work in the relief operations.

Mr. Nagamarapalli said that the All-India Kannada Sahitya Sammelan will be held in Bidar as scheduled earlier from January 27.

The sammelan will not be postponed again.

So far Rs. 1.05 crore has been collected for the purpose and Rs. 1 crore more is required, the Minister said.
