Oushadheeyam - 2005 is an ambitious project of the Nambrathkara Upper Primary School in Kozhikode district to educate students on ways of identifying and cultivating medicinal plants. The programme is an initiative of teachers, parents and students. During the three - month programme, the students would organise an exhibition of medicinal plants and collect traditional knowledge about these plants and traditional treatment methods used in the locality by folk physicians. K.A. Tajudheen, president of the organising committee of Oushadheeyam-2005, said the students would also honour senior ayurvedic physicians at Nambrathkara and take out a procession declaring the significance of their assignment in relation to improving societal health. Each student would set up at least a small garden of medicinal plants in his or her house. Oushadheeyam-2005 would be inaugurated on November 11 by Kozhikode district panchayat president K.P. Kunhammedkutty in the presence of the District Education Officer (DEO) Surendran. Vakamoli Nambeesan, Karuvachal Bhaskara Panicker, Ramachandran Vaidyar and Sekharan Vidyar, leading ayurvedic physicians at Nambrathkara, would also be honoured at the function. Another highlight would be a two-day exhibition of medicinal plants collected by Kuttyappurath Chandukutty who had spent a lifetime gathering and growing them. The programmes are being organised jointly by the School Science Club, Farm Club and Environment Club.
