Pondicherry
Special Correspondent
Pondicherry: Leader of the Opposition in the Pondicherry Assembly, R.V. Janakiraman (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam), has urged the Government to raise the cash relief proposed for the rain-ravaged families in Pondicherry and Karaikal regions from Rs. 500 to 1000. Mr. Janakiraman said in a release here on Tuesday that with the rain continuing, daily wage earners and farm labourers were badly hit. He urged the Government to provide Rs. 3,000 to each of these workers as an immediate relief. Farmers whose standing crop had been submerged should be paid a compensation of Rs. 10,000 per acre of land affected. They should also be exempted from payment of land tax. Those who had lost their huts totally should be extended a relief of Rs. 10,000 and where the damage was partial the relief should be Rs. 5,000. He said a coordinated committee should be formed to work out the relief and rehabilitation programmes on war footing. Mr Janakiraman distributed from his personal account Rs. 100 to each of the families affected by rain in Nellithoope Assembly constituency.
