Deepa Mehta for out-of-court settlement
New Delhi:
Film-maker Deepa Mehta on Tuesday submitted before the Delhi High Court that she would prefer out-of-court settlement with author Sunil Gangopadhyay, whose story was allegedly lifted for her film `Water,' which was ready for commercial release.
Ms. Mehta's father, appearing in person, said she would seek adjournment to settle the issue out-of-court with the writer and others.
Adjourning the matter till February 23, 2006, Justice Anil Kumar asked Ms. Mehta's counsel to file the settlement report before the court.
In 2000, she had filed a defamation suit against Mr. Gangopadhyay who had alleged that the film-maker had directly copied some scenes from his work `Shei Shomay' or its English translation `Those Days' for her script.
Reacting to Ms. Mehta's decision to approach the High Court in a suit seeking damages for defamation and a declaration upholding her right to make a film, Mr. Gangopadhyay had said that he had left the whole matter to his publisher Anand Publishers. UNI
