CHENNAI: Even as the low pressure area over the Bay has weakened, another low pressure area has formed over southwest Bay. The trough of low pressure extends from the Gulf of Mannar to north Tamil Nadu, according to the Meteorological office. Widespread rain is expected over coastal Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. Isolated heavy to very heavy fall is likely over Villupuram, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai and Tiruchi districts, besides Pondicherry.
Karaikal records 31 cm
In the 24-hour period ending 8-30 a.m. Tuesday, Karaikal recorded 31 cm, Nagapattinam 28 cm, Sirkazhi 20 cm, Nannilam 16 cm, Cuddalore 13 cm and Pondicherry 9 cm. Nungambakkam received 2 cm, Meenambakkam and Cholavaram 3 cm each, Poondi 4 cm and Tambaram and Chembarampakkam 5 cm each.
Reservoir position
Barring a few, all reservoirs in the State have almost reached their full level. Release of overflow from the Mettur dam is continuing at the rate of 22,000 cubic feet per second (cusecs). Bhavanisagar, the second major dam, reached its full level a week ago after a gap of a decade. The level stood at 103 ft (full level: 105 ft) with a storage of 31.3 thousand million cubic feet (tmcft). Amaravathi, another dam in the Cauvery basin, is about 10 feet short of the full level of 110 feet. Krishnagiri, Sathanur, Parambikulam and Aliyar dams are almost full.
Poor storage
However, Pechiparai, Perunchani, Manimuthar and Papanasam reservoirs have poor or low storage.
