KADAPA: CPI functionaries staged dharna before the Collectorate on Tuesday demanding expeditious disbursement of relief to flood-hit families in Kadapa town. Pucca houses should be built and financial aid disbursed to families rendered homeless in the recent flooding of the town, CPI district assistant secretary P. Krishnamurthy and leaders P. Chennakesava Reddy and G. Chandra demanded. Encroachment of drains must be removed and permanent drains built and damaged roads laid on a war-footing, they demanded. Several houses were partially damaged and people lost essential commodities due to inundation of Mrutyunjayakunta, NGO Colony, Chinna Chowk, A.S.C. Bose Nagar, Bahujan Nagar, N. Nagireddy Nagar, Ramakrishna Nagar, Easwar Reddy Nagar, Nabikot and Nakkash areas, they recalled. District official machinery was lax in extending relief to poor families which were badly hit, they alleged. Revenue officials are yet to assess the damage and there is a mismatch between claims of senior officials and lower-rung officials, they added. Officials were `exploiting' the situation and trying to shift poor families to the town outskirts, they said and sought issue of house site pattas for the houses built by poor, drainage canals to prevent water logging and flood protection walls.
