It's down to Davenport and Clijsters

LOS ANGELES: Without the Williams sisters, Lindsay Davenport finds herself as the lone American at the WTA championships, where she and Kim Clijsters will battle it out for the year-end No. 1 ranking.

Davenport takes a 155-point lead over the second-ranked Belgian into the season-ending tournament to be held at the Staples Centre.

Clijsters's statistics are better than Davenport's, as she has won nine titles and 66 matches through six tournaments compared to the American's 58 victories.

Davenport will try to end the year at No. 1 for the fourth time in her career.

Davenport opens against Russian Nadia Petrova, while Clijsters takes on Mary Pierce. Maria Sharapova will play Patty Schnyder in a round-robin format that will decide the semifinalists. Elena Dementieva and Amelie Mauresmo are the other players who will be seen in action in the tournament.

The tournament, which will end its four-year run in Los Angeles and move to Madrid next year, will be without the Williams sisters, who failed to qualify. — AP
