A setback to green drive

Staff Reporter

Residents of Lalithanagar express concern over civic safety and upkeep of greenery, following fall of a tree in the area.

AT THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM: The tree that got uprooted at Lalithanagar damaging a wall during the recent rain in the city.

VISAKHAPATNAM: A lot of effort has gone into greening several parts of the city. Planting saplings and raising them as avenue trees is a time-taking exercise. Once they grow up, they are offering shade to weary people and are adding to the beauty of the lanes. A street lined with avenue trees is like silver lining to the ever-expanding concrete jungle around us.

Trees play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance. However, improper maintenance is leading to their uprooting.

While appreciating the efforts of the horticulture wing of the Municipal Corporation of Visakhapatnam to increase greenery, residents of Lalithanagar express concern over the condition of trees. Their fears were due to the fall of a tree in the area.

Picture shows a tree uprooted at Lalithanagar during the recent wet spell. Residents say that the tree was not uprooted by gale. Overflowing drain water and rain waterwhich soaked the earth around its roots had uprooted the tree.

Since the uprooted tree fell in a vacant site, it caused no damage. Had it fallen on the power lines or the pole next to it, it would have been a major problem. Had it fallen on the road, it would have been a major traffic block, says Somu Naidu living in the area. Residents cite another tree close to the one which is tilting towards a building close to it.

If more attention is paid to maintenance of trees the uprooting can be stopped. If the MCV authorities trim the trees from time to time, uprooting could be avoided, residents feel.
