MADURAI: Though everyone knows that incidence of cancer is on an alarming scale, the statistics/data are not available for doctors to arrive at how many patients in a particular region are inflicted with it. But very soon Madurai will be able to give an accurate figure about the incidence of cancer, thanks to an initiative taken by the Oncology department of Government Rajaji Hospital.
"We are making arrangements to introduce the registry at the GRH and any doctor/private hospital in and around Madurai treating cancer patients can provide particulars to us," said B.K.C. Mohan Prasad, Professor and Head, Department of Surgical Oncology, GRH.
Experts from Bangalore Cancer Registry are collaborating with Madurai doctors to set up the facility by providing infrastructure and technical expertise.
Dr. Prasad said the success of Madurai registry would depend on private hospitals and doctors who had to feed patient particulars such as age, type of cancer, sex etc.
"We want to have authentic records on cancer patients in this region. The medical officers' cooperation is of utmost importance," he said. The doctors need to provide the patients' data only and they can continue to treat them.
On the mode of functioning of the registry, he said a special web site would be created on which other hospitals/doctors could post details.
The GRH, with 12,000 old cancer cases, gets 1,500 new cases every year.
