MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday directed the Kanyakumari Collector to look into a representation complaining of widespread menace of monkeys in paddy fields in and around Kallial village. Without expressing any opinion on the merits of the case, a Division Bench comprising Justice P.K. Misra and Justice A.R. Ramalingam ordered the Collector to consider a representation made by the petitioner. Moving a public interest litigation, G. Vivekanandan, 54, the district leader of the farmers' wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), said agricultural farms situated in Kallial, Sivalokam, Vaikundam, Arraka Nadu, Kattachal and Mankaadu were falling prey to the nuisance caused by thousands of monkeys from a nearby forest. Besides damaging the crops, the monkeys on at least two occasions attacked children in the village, he alleged. Claiming that the District Collector and Forest officials failed to initiate action despite preferring many complaints, the petitioner sought a direction to the authorities to chase the monkeys from the villages and to put up a low voltage electrical fence between forest and agricultural lands.
