Intermittent drizzles

MADURAI: The city continued to be covered by an overcast sky for the third consecutive day with intermittent drizzles. The residents are experiencing a cold condition as the atmospheric temperature has fallen considerably.

The maximum temperature, which was 34.6 and 32.6 degrees Celsius on November 1 and 2 respectively, has come down to 27.8 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

The minimum temperature has been below 24 degrees Celsius in the last four days.

Water level

Water level in the Periyar dam stood at 121.9 feet with an inflow of 531 cusecs and a discharge of cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 48.82 feet with an inflow of 863 cusecs and a discharge of 291 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 4550 mcft. Veerapandi recorded 2 mm of rainfall.

Constable dies

A police constable attached to the Tamil Nadu Special Police (Sixth Battalion) died after he consumed an excess quantity of neem oil. According to police sources, M. Maruthupandian (25) of Kochadai, who complained of uneasiness this morning, was rushed to the Government Rajaji Hospital where he died. The Tallakulam police have registered a case.

Train cancelled

Train no. 2641 Kanyakumari-Hazrat Nizamuddin Thirukkural Express scheduled to leave Kanyakumari on November 9 has been cancelled, due to heavy rain and breaches on track over South Central Railway, according to a Southern Railway press release.

Training programme

RUDSET Institute will conduct a one-week free modern dairy farming training programme. The programme will cover all aspects of modern dairy farming as an alternative self-employment venture, selection of hybrid milch animals, calf rearing, artificial insemination and pregnant animal management, cattle disease and control and cultivation of fodder crops and fodder preservation etc.

Besides, behavioural inputs like cooperative set up, achievement motivation, project report preparation, market survey, bank schemes, will also be covered.

Youth in the age group of 18-35 with a minimum educational qualification of Standard VIII can apply. Applications should contain the following details: name, address, age, educational qualification and experience in the relevant field.

The last date for submitting applications to the institute is November 25. The applications should be accompanied with Rs.5 stamped self-addressed cover.

Homoeopathy seminar

To create an awareness among the people of Homoeopathic system, the Madurai Chapter of Tamil Nadu Homoeopathic Association will organise a one-day State-level seminar, `Pegasus'05 Inspired Homoeopathy,' on December 4.

Addressing newspersons here on Monday, P. Subramanian, president of Tamil Nadu Homoeopathic Association, and N. Subramanian, Principal, Hahnemann Homoeopathy Medical College, Rasipuram and Chairman, Board of Studies, (Homoeo-Medicine), MGR University, said that there was a dire need for an alternative system of medicine as the existing mainstream medical system could not satisfy the needs of suffering people.

"Homoeopathy is gaining an upper hand because it cures the root cause of the problem and above all it has no side effects. People who are afraid of the growth of the system have been raising doubts and apprehensions about it," said Mr. Subramanian. — Staff Reporter
