NIZAMABAD: As many as 17 school children were injured, some of them seriously, when their school van was involved in a road accident with an oncoming tipper at Tadem Chowrasta in Nizamabad mandal on Tuesday morning. Driver Praveen lost both legs and a fifth standard student Rajender and seventh standard student Mounika fractured their legs. Another child Haribhushan, studying second standard, got head injuries. The seriously injured children were shifted to Hyderabad after preliminary medical treatment. The rest of the injured children were admitted to the District Headquarters Hospital. According to some of the children, the speeding tipper coming in the opposite direction after hitting the van dragged it to some distance. In all, 35 children belonging to Chinnapur, Kulaspur and Badsi villages were travelling to the Siva Sivani Public School at Vinayaknagar when the mishap occurred. Mild tension prevailed at the Government Hospital following members of youth clubs led by district Youth Federation president Bobbili Narasaiah expressing ire at the duty doctors and hospital staff over the alleged delay in attending on the injured children. The youths who gathered in a good strength alerted the higher authorities and complained about the alleged negligence of doctors and the paramedical staff and lack of medical facilities at the hospital. They relented only after the authorities ensured immediate medical aid at some private nursing homes to a couple of seriously injured children.
