NEW YORK: The United Nations on Tuesday said it had received a letter from the Congress party seeking documents based on which the Volcker Committee had named it a non-contractual beneficiary of the Iraqi oil-for-food programme. U.N. officials said the documents relating to the probe conducted by Paul Volcker, former head of the U.S. Federal Reserve, were still with the committee which would respond to the letter. The Congress on Monday sent the letter to U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan seeking the documents based on which Volcker Committee named in its report the party as a beneficiary of Iraqi oil payoffs as also a number of clarifications on whether the panel had sent notice to the party on its findings. The letter also wanted to know whether the Committee or anyone acting on its behalf had invited the Congress Party to respond and submit any evidence corroborating or refuting the information. PTI
