NEW DELHI: Even as Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit left for France on Tuesday night, large parts of Delhi faced a water crisis. Many areas in West Delhi, North Delhi and Outer Delhi were affected as at least two water treatment plants -- Nangloi and Haiderpur -- of the Delhi Jal Board failed to make optimum production due to shortage of raw water supply. The crisis that has been there for the past few days is due mainly to shortage in raw water supply from Haryana. Since Sunday, the 40 MGD (million gallons per day) Nangloi plant has been facing a water shortage and since Monday the two units of 100 MGD each at Haiderpur have also been hit. Normally, the three units produce almost 50 MGD more than its capacity. However, the production has fallen by at least 100 MGD. On its part, the Haryana Government has cited lack of proper regulated water supply from Punjab as the reason for curtailment of Delhi's needs. The crisis has affected localities mainly in West, North and Outer Delhi that get supply from the three units. The badly hit areas include Janakpuri, Uttam Nagar, Hari Nagar, Rajouri Garden, Tilak Nagar, Mayapuri, Dhaula Kuan, R K Puram, Najafgarh, Madipur, Nangloi, Shalimar Bagh, Rohini, Palam, Punjabi Bagh and Dwarka. The situation is likely to continue for some more days even as DJB officials are trying to get additional water from Haryana. The main reason behind the crisis is the short supply in the Yamuna from Punjab to Haryana that in turn is affecting availability of raw water to Delhi.
