This Day That Age
The Congress Working Committee, meeting in New Delhi on November 9, decided that Greater Bombay, Maharashtra, including Vidarbha, and Gujarat should be formed into three separate States. In a resolution, the Committee also expressed the opinion that it would be desirable, subject to the wishes of the people concerned, for the Telangana area to be merged with the Andhra State. It accepted the proposal of the States Reorganisation Commission for the creation of a new State comprising Mahakoshal, Vindhya Pradesh, Madhya Bharat and Bhopal. A sub-committee consisting of Mr. U.N. Dhebar, Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru, Maulana Azad and Pandit Pant is to consider, in consultation with the people concerned, the question of Punjab, PEPSU and Himachal Pradesh. The sub-committee will also consider and take a decision in regard to the proposed Karnataka State, including Mysore, and various border issues arising out of the Commission's report. The resolution said that Uttar Pradesh should remain as at present subject to such minor border adjustments as might be considered necessary. The Committee accepted the recommendation in regard to the new Kerala State, subject to border adjustments, and the consequential changes in the State of Madras. It also accepted the merger of Ajmer with Rajasthan. The Committee agreed that Delhi, Manipur and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands should be Centrally-administered territories.
