dated November 10, 1955: Tito as mediator

The problem of preventing the present sporadic fighting on the Israeli borders from touching off a full-scale war is proving the greatest headache to the Western powers since the Indo-China ceasefire in July last year. As fighting flared up on the Egyptian-Israeli frontier over the week-end, Western thoughts turned to the possibility of the Yugoslav President, Marshal Tito, acting as mediator in the dispute. The US Secretary of State, Mr. John Foster Dulles, said after his meeting with Marshal Tito that they discussed the Middle East situation with particular regard to the fact that the Yugoslav President was slated to visit Cairo for talks with the Egyptian Prime Minister, Lt. Col. Gamal Abdel Nasser. Sources in New York indicated that Marshal Tito might have impressed on the Secretary of State that military interference in the Middle East was bound to upset the delicate Arab-Israeli balance.
