CHENNAI:
A few species of migratory birds have started arriving at the Karikili Lake, close to the Vedanthangal bird sanctuary.
Forest department authorities here say that about 5,000 birds belonging to eight species of birds and three species of ducks have been sighted at the Karikili waterhole.
The Vedanthangal tank had more than a foot of water, which was set to increase soon.
Water level
But, at Karikili the water level is higher, explaining why the birds have settled there for the season, the officials said.
White Ibis, open-bill, spoonbill, grey, night and pond herons, grey pelicans, cormorants, darters and three species of egrets are some of the birds that have colonised Karikili.
Duck species
Pintail and spot-billed ducks, common teal and dabchicks are the duck species that can be sighted at Karikili now.
The Karikili tank is located nine km from Vedanthangal.
Further details can be had from the Wildlife Warden's office at phone number 24321471.
