KANCHEEPURAM: Residents of Thiruparkadal village have been forced to wade through floodwater due to the delay in the construction of a bridge linking it to Pazhayaseevaram. The causeway connecting the places has been submerged by water from river Cheyyar that joins the Palar at Pazhayaseevaram. Though the construction of a higher-level bridge was taken up in 2002, only 40 piers to support the carriageway have come up till now. The residents of Thiruparkadal and other hamlets situated on the banks of the Palar are forced to take a detour through Thirupulivanam to reach Kancheepuram or to take the rough and bumpy Mamandur-Uthiramerur Road to reach Chengalpattu.
Tanks overflowing
Twelve out of 16 major tanks/lakes under the control of the Lower Palar Basin Wing of the Public Works Department are overflowing. While the water level at the Madurantakam lake neared 17 feet against the full storage level of 21.3 feet, the Thenneri lake had storage of 15 feet (full storage 20.6 feet), the Uthiramerur tank had 13.5 feet (20 feet), and the Thamal lake 15.5 feet (18.6 feet).
Relief distributed
Handlooms Minister V. Somasundaram and Collector R. Venkatesan on Tuesday distributed relief materials to the rain-hit people in the Mangadu, Thandalam and Sunguvarchatram areas of Sriperumpudur taluk.
