Unnecessary comment

Just a day after setting up an enquirycommission over the Volcker Report, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's comment that there is no proof against the Congress or Natwar Singh was unnecessary.

The commission should be left alone to investigate the matter without any interference.

Maraimalai Nagar, T.N.

There was no need for Dr. Singh to say that "Anyone can write any name, any story. That does not prove anything."

After all, a committee has been appointed to look into the charges levelled.

The names of Mr. Natwar Singh or the Congress did not show up in the Volcker report out of the blue.

It is a serious report and deserves to be treated as such.

Dr. Singh has said there is "no proof against the Congress and Natwar Singh." Then why set up an enquiry commission? Against whom is the probe directed "to get to the root of the matter"?

The Prime Minister's statement "giving a clean chit" to Mr. Natwar Singh and the Congress gives rise to the feeling that an effort is being made to sidetrack the issue.

One would have expected a man of Mr. Natwar Singh's stature to resign voluntarily the moment the report was made public. Instead, by adopting a defiant approach, he has sent the wrong signal to his admirers.

Amaruvi Devanathan,

Mr. Natwar Singh's continuation in the External Affairs Ministry would have hampered an impartial investigation into the matter. Natural justice demands that he be removed from the Union Cabinet till his name is cleared.

NDA convener George Fernandes' demand for the resignation of the Congress president as chairperson of the National Advisory Council in the wake of the Volcker Report is funny. Has he forgotten that he continued as Defence Minister while the probe into the Tehelka matter was still on?

J.M. Manchanda,
New Delhi

The NDA's demand for the resignation of Dr. Manmohan Singh is unreasonable. It only shows that the NDA is starved of issues to raise in its effort to bring down the government.

Anusha Singh Saharan,
New Delhi

Dr. Singh has not, in my opinion, displayed political acumen in handling the allegations against both Mr. Natwar Singh and the Congress. Mr. Singh should not have been relieved of his Ministry as the charges against him had in no way been substantiated.

Leeds, U.K.
