Letters to the Editor
Thank you for highlighting the plight of the mentally ill and the abysmally low priority that mental health occupies in the national budgeting exercise in the editorial, `The challenge of mental illness,' (Nov. 9). Medicine and psychiatry have a large role to play in alleviating the suffering of the mentally ill. Psychology and psychologists too play a significant role. A progressive approach to the treatment of the mentally ill requires a recognition of the need not only for trained medical personnel and psychiatrists but also for trained psychologists.
