Format for filing cases related to electoral roll irregularities on anvil

Photo identity cards not before Assembly elections: Naresh Gupta

TIRUNELVELI: A standard format for filing cases against those responsible for stuffing of applications at the time of revision of electoral rolls is being drafted, Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta said on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters here after chairing a review meeting with the Collectors of Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Tuticorin and Virudhunagar districts, he said the Election Commission's counsels were preparing the format. Once ready, it would be forwarded to all District Collectors who, in turn, would send it to the Election Returning Officers concerned.

"The EROs, with all factual materials, will file cases before the magistrates concerned, but it will take some time," he said.

On bringing out electoral rolls with the photographs of voters, Mr. Gupta said it would not be possible for the Commission to introduce it before the Assembly elections. It would require a minimum of four verifications within a span of five to six months to ensure the identity of the voters and thereby guaranteeing error-free electoral rolls.

He said the exercise of photographing voters for the Electors' Photo Identity Card would commence in mid-December.

Joint Chief Electoral Officer (Computerisation) P. Senthil Kumar and Joint Chief Electoral Officer S. Pragada; District Collectors Atul Anand of Tirunelveli, V. Chandrasekaran of Tuticorin, A. Mohammed Aslam of Virudhunagar and Collector (in-charge) B. Jothi Nirmala of Kanyakumari; Tirunelveli Corporation Commissioner D. Chandrasekaran and other officials attended the meeting.
