Rain likely in north coastal areas, Pondy

CHENNAI: Even as the low pressure area persisted and lay over the southwest bay on Wednesday, the trough of low pressure has moved westward.

Rain is expected over many places over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. Scattered rain may occur over the remaining parts of the State.

During the 24-hour period that ended at 8-30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sirkazhi (Nagapattinam district) recorded 11 cm while Parangipettai and Mayiladuthurai recorded 9 cm each. Chidambaram received 8 cm and Panruti, Tiruvidaimarudur and Thuckalay 7 cm each. — Special Correspondent

Minister urges public not to believe rumours

KANCHEEPURAM: Handlooms Minister V. Somasundaram and Kancheepuram Collector R. Venkatesan have urged the public not to believe rumours that the bunds of the Madurantakam and Sriperumpudur lakes in the district have developed cracks. After inspecting the Madurantakam lake on Wednesday morning, the Minister and Collector said while the Sriperumpudur lake was just overflowing, the level at Madurantakam lake had touched 18.50 feet against its full storage level of 21.30 feet. The PWD officials were constantly inspecting the bunds of important lakes.

Later they for Pallikaranai, Okkiyam, Thoraipakkam and Kundrathur areas to supervise relief operations carried out by the revenue and local officials. At Tambaram, Rural Industries Minister B. Valarmathi and the Collector distributed relief material to 482 families. — Staff Reporter

Special trains to Tiruchi, Madurai

CHENNAI: Southern Railway is to run the following special trains to clear the rush of passengers.

Train no. 0634 Tiruchi-Chennai Egmore special will leave Tiruchi at 9 p.m. on November 10 and arrive at Egmore here at 4 a.m. the next day. In the return direction, train no. 0633 will leave Egmore at 11 p.m. on November 14 and reach Tiruchi at 6 a.m. the next day.

Train no. 0630 Madurai-Egmore special will leave Madurai at 10 p.m. on November 11 and 14 and arrive at Egmore at 7 a.m. the next day. In the return direction, it will leave Egmore at 11 p.m. on November 12 and 16 and reach Madurai at 8.45 a.m. the next day.

Train no. 0611 Chennai Egmore-Nagercoil special will leave Egmore at 8.30 p.m. on November 11 and reach Nagercoil at 12.30 p.m. the next day. In the return direction, it will leave Nagercoil at 7.30 p.m. on November 13 and arrive at Egmore at 9 a.m. the next day. — Special Correspondent

Electricity employees plan stir tomorrow

CHENNAI: The Central Organisation of Tamil Nadu Electricity Employees has decided to hold demonstrations on Friday to demand regularisation of the services of all contract workers. S. Pancharatnam, general secretary, said though members of the organisation were on strike since November 3 on this issue and to press for payment of ex gratia to all, no action had been taken by the Government and the Electricity Board. This was why the call for the State-wide demonstrations had been given. — Special Correspondent

IAF recruitment rally put off

PONDICHERRY: The recruitment rally scheduled by the Indian Air Force here from November 11 to 16 has been postponed due to inclement weather, a release from the Director of Sainik Welfare Department here said on Wednesday. The fresh date would be announced later. — Special Correspondent

One held for assault

Tuticorin: The police on Wednesday arrested Marimuthu (21) on the charge of assaulting Pancharvarnam (45), wife of Madurai Veeran, here on Nov. 7. The accused had picked up a quarrel with her over a trivial issue. Pancharvarnam was admitted to Tuticorin Government Hospital.

In another incident, Paramasivam (35) was arrested on Wednesday for assaulting Packiyam (55) at Thomas Nagar near Kovilpatti on Monday, over a land dispute.

Man murders mother

TIRUNELVELI: The Sernthamaram police are looking for a youth who hacked his mother to death.

Police said K. Pavunuthaai (40) of Kulasekaramangalam was found murdered on Tuesday. The family of the victim had settled down at Uthamapalayam in Theni district as the head of the family, Krishnasamy, was working as a warden in a hostel there. After Pavunuthaai developed extra-marital affair there, she was sent back to her native place recently. When her son, K. Sarvanapandian, came to Kulasekaramangalam on Monday, he came to know of the affair and murdered her.

70-year-old man dies

TIRUNELVELI: A teashop owner was killed in a road accident here on Tuesday.

Police said C. Subbiah (70) of Keezhanaththam and his wife, Shanmugathaai (65) were going to a temple in an autorickshaw. Near Padappaikurichi, a private bus dashed against the auto killing Subbiah on the spot while his wife sustained minor injuries. Bus driver, S. Durgaimuthu (52) of Sengulam was arrested.

Held for cheating

Tuticorin: The police on Tuesday arrested Sankarapandian (51), a resident of Kovilpatti, on the charge of cheating Siva (33).

Police sources said Siva bought a 48-cent land at Kovilpatti from Sankarapandian for Rs.85,000 in 2003.

He realised recently that Sankarapandian was the legitimate owner of the land, and he had cheated him.

Two lottery sellers held

Tuticorin: The police arrested two persons on the charge of possessing lottery tickets here on Monday. Madasamy (33) and Ramamurthy (25) were taken into custody while they tried to sell the tickets at Kamaraj Vegetable Market. Nineteen lottery tickets were seized from them.

Man dies in accident

Tuticorin: A man was injured when a car hit the motorcycle he was riding Ilayaranenthan road near Kovilpatti recently. Vimal Suvaskar (22) of Alagiyapandiyapuram in Kanyakumari district hit the bike of Velusamy (38). He was admitted to Kovilpatti Government Hospital. Vimal was arrested. — Staff Reporter

Awareness camp

SALEM: Collector A. Sukumaran inaugurated the National Voluntary Blood Donation Day celebrations and awareness camp here on Tuesday.

Speaking at the function, he said the district administration was conducting awareness campaigns to educate people on blood donation every year. People should be encouraged to donate blood voluntarily through these campaigns. The Periyar University had brought out a blood donors directory containing addresses of more than 6,000 donors. The non-governmental organisations and hospitals should also bring out similar directories, which would help reach out to donors in emergency situations, he added. Dean, Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College, P. Anusuya presided over the function. Deputy Director of Health K. Soundararajan welcomed. - Staff Reporter

ESI dispensary sought

NAMAKKAL: The Tamil Nadu Consumer Vigilance Council (TNCVC) has appealed to the district administration to take efforts to set up an Employee State Insurance dispensary in Namakkal town.

Participating in the District Consumer Council meeting here on Monday, Chairman of TNCVC S. Selvam submitted a petition in this regard to the Collector, V.M. Xavier Chrisso Nayaygam, who presided over the meeting. The council also asked the administration to remove all the encroachments in the town. Other demands of TNCVC included restraining political parties from erecting cut-outs in the important places in the town, clearing drainage channels near the Namakkal bus stand and repairing the clock tower. - Staff Reporter

One killed, 12 injured as bus overturns

Krishnagiri: One person was killed and 12 seriously injured when the Government bus in which they were travelling overturned at Bynapalli, near here, on Wednesday. The police said the bus was on the way from Chennai to Bangalore. The accident occurred when it lost control while negotiating a curve. Kesavan (55), a passenger of Vellore district died on the spot. The injured have been admitted to Krishnagiri Government Hospital.

The police also recovered 20 gelatine sticks from a cloth bag inside the bus.

Campaign for health

Krishnagiri: A Family Health Awareness campaign will be held in all blocks in the district from November 14 to 28, said the Collector, Mangat Ram Sharma, here on Wednesday. As part of the campaign 265 medical camps will be organised in all the blocks. Of this 245 camps would be held in rural areas and 20 in the Krishnagiri and Hosur Municipalities.

Each sub-centre will have a male and female camp, covering people in the age group of 15 to 49. Forty doctors will be employed for the campaign and medicines valued at Rs. 1 lakh would be utilised during the camps, he said. - Staff Reporter

State-level quiz

Coimbatore: A State-level Inter Nursing Collegiate quiz Zenith 2005 will be organised for nursing students of the State on November 12 by PSG College of Nursing. It will be on community health nursing, maternity nursing and general knowledge. Registration and preliminary tests will be conducted at 9.30 a.m. in which about 15 nursing colleges will participate.

Advocates stage demonstration

KARUR: Advocates attached to the Karur Bar Association chose not to attend courts on Wednesday, protesting against filing of charges against one of their colleagues. It is said that the Pasupathipalayam police had filed cases against advocate Velusamy and his kin Devaraj, after they quarrelled among themselves over some land dispute a couple of days back. The quarrel had left both of them injured. Police filed cases against both of them. So, bar members, led by the president, Murugaiyyan, staged a demonstration in front of the Pasupathipalayam police station. — Staff Reporter
