`Internet project will usher in new era'

Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI: Chief General Manager of BSNL's Southern Telecom Projects, Chennai, R. Purushothaman, has said that the second phase of the National Internet Backbone (NIB-II) project, taken up recently, will usher in a new era of communication by taking high speed internet to all towns.

While Hyderabad, Rajahmundry, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Tirupati were among the cities to get broadband facility in the first phase, the second phase would connect 29 more cities/towns in the South, including Eluru, Warangal and Guntur in the State.

The project, running into 7,900 km down the Vindhyas, would bring in a revolutionary change in the field of telecommunications, he said, also making a mention of the Tuticorin-Sri Lanka under-the-sea OFC-laying project.

Speaking after presenting the `Sanchar Sarathi' and `Sanchar Seva Padak' awards to 11 employees who have excelled in various fields at a function here on Wednesday, Mr. Purushothaman advised them to work with renewed commitment.

K.M. Doraiswamy, General Manager (Transmission Projects), Hyderabad and R. Mani, General Manager, Tirupati Telecom District, spoke.
