NEDUMBASSERY: INSAT 4-A, the first satellite of the INSAT-4 series, will be launched from French Guyana in South America by the middle of next month, said Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman G. Madhavan Nair on Wednesday. Talking to presspersons at Cochin International Airport in Nedumbassery, he said the satellite would be one of the most powerful ones in the world and the biggest to be launched by India till date. The satellite will have 12 communication transponders and 12 transponders for facilitating direct-to-home (DTH) satellite-link telecast applications. He said the work on GSLV Mark III is under way at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre at Thumba under a Rs.2,500-crore launch vehicle project. It is expected to lift off in 2008. It will be capable of carrying a four-tonne satellite, he said. He was here in connection with the distribution of doctorates at the Cochin University of Science and Technology.
