Seven-day mourning

Special Correspondent

The body of the former President will be kept at Kapurthala House to enable the public to pay homage

NEW DELHI: The Government on Wednesday night announced a seven-day mourning in memory of the former President, K.R. Narayanan. He will be cremated here on Thursday evening with full military honours at a spot near Shantivan — the memorial of his mentor Jawaharlal Nehru.

Decisions to this effect were taken by the Union Cabinet, which met soon after Mr. Narayanan's death. The Cabinet condoled his death and hailed his contributions to the nation. It also passed a resolution placing on record his services. During the mourning, flags will fly at half-mast and there will be no official entertainment.

The body of the former President will be brought to Kapurthala House on Thursday morning. It will be kept there between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to enable the public to pay homage.

Last rites

From Kapurthala House, the body will be taken to the cremation ground for the last rites at a spot near the place where his predecessors Shankar Dayal Sharma and Zail Singh were cremated. The chosen spot lies between the memorials of Nehru and his successor Lal Bahadur Shastri at Vijay Ghat.
